Research Description: Poor diet quality is estimated to account for up to 70% of all new type 2 diabetes cases globally. Policy changes could improve diet quality and prevent type 2 diabetes, but policymakers need evidence about which policies work and which don’t. Dr. Grummon’s research seeks to design and evaluate food policies to maximize their potential to improve diet, prevent chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, and advance health equity. Her work has shown that well-designed food policies can encourage consumers to make healthier food choices, spur food retailers to reformulate their offerings, improve population health outcomes, and narrow health disparities. Dr. Grummon’s research has also uncovered strategies for designing policies like sugary drink taxes and warning labels to maximize their benefits.
