Michael S. Hughes
Michael S. Hughes, MD, Instructor, Division of Endocrinology, Gerontology and Metabolism, Stanford University School of Medicine
Research Description: Dr. Hughes is an endocrinologist and clinical investigator who specializes in advanced diabetes technologies, type 1 diabetes, and the transition of care from pediatric to adult settings. At Stanford Hospital, he collaborates with the interdisciplinary Inpatient Diabetes Task Force team to tackle inpatient diabetes management challenges. Dr. Hughes spearheaded development of a protocol that now empowers patients to utilize readings from their continuous glucose monitors for inpatient insulin dosing, while maintaining oversight of ongoing sensor accuracy. He was involved in the development, implementation, and conduct of the multi-institutional Automated Insulin Delivery for INpatients with DysGlycemia (AIDING) Feasibility Study, which explored the application of commercial automated insulin delivery system in the inpatient environment inpatient, laying foundational infrastructure for future explorations of automated insulin delivery in the hospital. Dr. Hughes works closely with Drs. Bruce Buckingham and Rayhan Lal in the Stanford Automated Insulin Delivery lab, participating as an investigator in clinical trials that examine new advancements in automated insulin delivery and diabetes technologies. Additionally, he co-leads the "Guided Transfer" initiative with Dr. Rayhan Lal, a structured process developed to optimize the transition of patients with chronic endocrine conditions from pediatric to adult clinics. This method was begun in a randomized controlled trial and is now being redesigned into a single-arm quality improvement initiative.
